History of Love Songs

 History of love songs

  • Love songs have been around forever. Some early love songs are thought to have originated from as far back as the 8th century, in ballads performed by Arabic slaves to their masters. The earliest known songwriter is thought to be a high priestess in ancient Mesopotamia back in 2250 BC named Enheduanna

  • Many early love songs started off as poetry that would be accompanied by an instrument – for example, Sappho in ancient Greece performed her poems accompanied with a cithara- an early guitar

  • Love songs are global and have been produced all around the world for centuries – in India, China and the Middle East to name a few places. However, love ballads became truly popular in the Medieval and Renaissance eras. More complicated songs with rounds or cannons became popular in the Renaissance era, which are most reminiscent of today's love songs.

  • Almost every artist has produced a love song at some point in their career. Some examples include: "My Heart Will Go On" - Celine Dion, "I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston, "Can't Help Falling In Love" - Elvis Presley, and many more
